抄録: Learning outcomes have gained greater importance in the context of increased accountability in higher education. In Japan, oral proficiency in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs is one learning outcome that is being measured. As a result, evaluative instruments and assessment tasks to measure oral proficiency have been developed, critiqued and revised. This paper focuses on speaking assessments conducted at the World Language Center (WLC), Soka University. The development, rationale and methodology of the speaking assessment are explained and data gathered from a limited sample are analyzed. Based on these results, revisions to the speaking assessment are provided.
